This is a Dictionary of biographies written by Fantahun Engeda and published in 2008. It includes the life of Ethiopian kings and leaders, heroes, politicians, artists, famous athletes and great personalities. The names of the persons are given according to the order of the Amharic alphabet and takes account of personalities from Antiquity up to the end of the 20th century.. The author warns the reader in his introduction that he has been obliged to be selective and explains the reasons for which it was not able to be more exhaustive. Yet, one finds in the work of 740 pages, with small fonts and tight space between words and lines, a remarkably high number of names and a considerable amount of information.

A book on the preparation of Ethiopian manuscripts by Fekade Sellassie, published in 2010 in Addis Abeba. A thorough explanation is given of the various aspects of book making, divided in 14 chapters. The author dedicates many pages on paleography, the life of Ethiopian scribes, their training, their technique of preparing colors, ink, parchments and the art of binding.

This is a collection of articles on the interaction of climate change, care of the environment and sustainable development in Ethiopia, edited by Alebachew Adem in 2012. It contains 6 articles by different authors: 1) Climate change in Ethiopia: symptoms, consequences and threats; 2) the relationship between climate change and poverty in Ethiopia; 3) Climate change and erosion in Ethiopia; 4) building the capacity of agriculture in order to resist to climate change; 5) Climate change, women and social health-care in Ethiopia; 6) Climate change, water and energy in Ethiopia.

This book reprinted for the third time in 2007 is a study of Teferi Mekonnen’s life, from birth to adulthood, before he became Emperor Haile Sellassie. The author, Zewde Reta, explains how this could take place despite the fact that Teferi Mekonnen was not the direct heir of the Ethiopian throne. Based on various documents and reports of eyewitnesses, the book helps to clarify recent oral traditions and rumors concern Emperor Hailesselassie’s access to power.

Published for the first time in 2000, and reprinted five times since then, this book explains with great details and with rich historical documents all relevant issues concerning Eritrea from 1941 to 1963. The year 1941 marked the end of 5 years of Italian occupation in Ethiopia and the termination of 60 years of Italian Colony in Eritrea. The role played by Ethiopia, the U.S.A, Great Britain, the Soviet Union, France and several other countries concerning Eritrea has been discussed by Zewde Reta, a former journalist and Ambassador of Ethiopia to Italy. The author, had access to rare and hitherto unknown documents thanks to his proximity to Emperor Haile Selassie and key persons in the court of Ethiopia.

A Ge’ez- Amharic Dictionary by Belay Mekonnen, published in Addis Ababa, in 2008, on the occasion of “Ethiopian” entrance into the Third Millennium. The dictionary offers over 10, 000 entries. An attempt to make the classical language accessible to modern readers is visible in the various usages of a given word illustrated by sentences from modern social life. The expression “a living language” in the title indicates the concern to show the importance of Ge’ez.

An Amharic-Ge’ez Dictionary, with more than 15, 000 words, by Belay Mekonnen, published in Addis Ababa, in 2009 by the same author of A Ge’ez-Amharic Dictionary. This time, term “resurrection” is included in the Title. This work seems to be the first in its kind. The author has tried to give new Ge’ez words for modern Amharic terms inexistent in in Ge’ez.

A book of detailed historical and geographical information on Ethiopian Churches and monasteries (over 500 hundred), biographies of religious people and relevant ecclesiastical personalities. It is written in Amharic by Daniel Kebret and published in 2007. The entries follow an alphabetical order.

This is a dictionary of literary terms in Amharic by Fantahun Engeda, published in 2011, in Addis Ababa. The entries are taken from oral literature, fiction, poetry, essays, theatre, literary critique, and literary genres and the various elements of the art of narration. While the Amharic alphabetical order is followed, the author gives an English equivalent word at the end of the presentation of a given entry.

This book by Elias Nebiya Le’ul and Kefylew Merahi, published in 2000, presents various types of Ge’ez poems (Qenie) with their Amharic translation, their interpretation and a substantial description of the historical context in which the poem has been composed. Biographical data concerning the author of the poem is also given.

An exegetical presentation of prophets of the Old Testament by Misrak Tiyo, published in 2013. After two preliminary chapters dedicated to the socio-historical background of the prophets, the book presents each book of the Old Testament prophets. Besides issues of content and form, the author discusses each prophet’s relevance in the Context of the New Testament.

A second edition of the novel entitled “Adafres”, written by Dagnachew Worku, published by Addis Ababa, 2015. The first edition was published in 1970. This is one of the most difficult and original Amharic novels. One has to read it several times in order to appreciate the plot, the rich Amharic vocabulary and the innovative style.

Egwala Gebra Yohannes, The method of Higher Study, Addis Ababa, in 2011. This is also a second edition of a book originally published in 1962. It is a reflection on the need of integrating Western Knowledge with Ethiopian traditional knowledge. The author, who has the background of traditional Ethiopian wisdom and studied western philosophy in Western Europe, underlines that higher education in Ethiopia will not succeed unless one incorporates the two traditions.

Based on Traditional Ethiopian theology, the book explains the role of Mary in the New Testament. Almost all the references to Mary in the Gospels and other parts of the New Testament are discussed.

Rodas Tadesse, Mariology among the Church Fathers, Part I, 2015. In this book, the author who explained the role of Mary in the New Testament does the same for the period that concerns and follows the era of the Apostles. It covers the fathers of the first four centuries.
– ገድለ አቡነ እስጢፋኖስ ዘጕንዳጕንዶ፣ 1996 ዓ.ም.
The Acts of Abuna Estifanos of Gunda Gundo, published in 2004. It describes in Ge’ez with an Amharic translation (second column) the life of the founder of a monastic movement persecuted in the 15th century. He advocated ascetic life, poverty and autonomy with regard to secular power. He faced much opposition, and, together with his followers, underwent much persecution accused of heresy.

This is a collection of Amharic idiomatic expressions and their explanation by Berhanu GebreTsadiq, published in Addis Ababa in 2001 (312 pages). It is easy to make a search for the expressions for they are presented according to the Amharic alphabetical order. There are also about 1200 exercises whereby the reader is invited to match a given expression with the corresponding explanation or expression. The keys to the exercises are given at the end of the book.

A collection of 8500 Amharic proverbial expressions, by Berhanu GebreTsadiq, published in Addis Ababa in 2007. The proverbs are presented according to the Amharic alphabetical order. Explanations are however not given after each proverb. There is a glossary of difficult Amharic terms at the end of the book.

A collection of over 1500 Amharic idiomatic expressions and their explanation by Debebe Haileghiorghis, published in Addis Ababa in 2002 (404 pages). At each entry, one finds the idiom in alphabetical order, its explanations and a sentence that shows how the idiom is used in Amharic. The examples are valuable indeed for they show the usage of the idioms. Exercises are also included with their keys.

A collection of Amharic proverbs in alphabetical, by Debebe Haileghiorghis, published in Addis Ababa in 2005 (475 pages). Each proverb, whenever available, is followed by one or more equivalent proverbs and an explanation. Exercises and keys are provided. At the end of the book, one finds a glossary of difficult Amharic terms.

An explanation of Qəne (a genre of Ge’ez literature) and humoristic short stories by Tadele Gadle, published in 2003 (162 pages). The first section is dedicated to the meaning pf Qəne, its background and its significance. The author has also added historical humoristic stories supposed to have happened in during the traditional schools of Qǝne or that caused the composition of some Qənes. In the second section humoristic and satirical memoirs are narrated.
– አክሊሉ ታደለ፣ ክህነትና ካህን በቤቱ በዕሥራ ምእት (2000 ዓ.ም.)፤ አዲስ አበባ፣ 1999 ዓ.ም.
This is a treatise of Christian priesthood from the perspective of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, by Aklilu Tadele, published in 2007, in Addis Ababa (174 pages). It has three parts. The first part deals with priesthood in general. The second focuses on Priesthood in Ethiopia. The third discusses pastoral and moral issues supposed to be respected by the priest.

A collection of the correspondence of Emperor Menelik presented by Paulos Gnogno, a famous journalist and writer. The posthumous work, published in 2011, presents 2242 letters, addressed to issues with Ethiopia or written within Ethiopia (622 pages).

This is a collection of the correspondence of Emperor Menelik presented by Paulos Gnogno, a famous journalist and writer. The posthumous work, published in 2011, presents 1043 letters showing his communication with foreign countries, mainly Europe (336 pages).

This book, published by Abba Hagos Shǝfara in 2014, presents a collection of Ge’ez hymns sung on Sundays according to the Ethiopian Liturgy. It begins with an explanation of sacred objects kept for the liturgy, prayers said before the Eucharistic celebration, the Praises of Mary (ውዳሴ ማርያም) and Mystagogy, the prayers of Kidan (prayer of the covenant), the Hymns of Sundays, Responsorial psalms (ምስባክ), intercessory prayers, solemn vespers of major feasts and biblical texts fitting to the liturgical seasons.

This book, published in 2014 by Merigeta Hawaza Berehan, has various texts: A Ge’ez-Amharic version of the Hexameron (a theological treatise describing God’s work on the six days of creation), a text on the edification of monks, a Eucharistic prayer (Ge’ez-Amharic) and an Amharic commentary of the creed.
– ያሬድ ሽፈራው (ሊቀ ሊቃውንት) መጽሐፈ ግስ ወሰዋስው መርኆ መጻሕፍት፣ በሕር ዳር፣ 2002 ዓ.ም.
This is a grammar by Yared Shiferaw, an Ethiopian traditional scholar, teacher of Ge’ez Qenie and commentaries of the New Testament. The book focuses on the conjugation of Ge’ez verbs accompanied by examples that show their usage. The verbs are classified according to the Ethiopian alphabetical order. However, one should remember that, unlike in dictionaries, it is the last syllable of each word that is taken as a basis for the alphabetical order. The book has been reprinted for the third time, the first edition being in 2005.

The liturgy of the hours composed by Giorgis of Gaseccha, is published by Rodas Tadesse, in 2014, with its Amharic commentary. The prayers reflect deep theological (Trinitarian, Christological, ecclesiological and Mariological) themes.
– ፊዮደር ደስቶየቭስኪ፣ ወንጀልና ቅጣት፣ ተርጓሚዎች፡- ካሳ ገ/ህይወት ፈንቱ ሳህሌ፣ ሻማ ቡክስ፤ 1997፤ ዓ.ም.
This is a translation into Amharic of Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment, by Kassa Gebre Hiwot and Fantu Sahle, published in 2005. The translators, in their notice and acknowledgement at the beginning of the book, affirm that the work is fruit of their desire of allowing Ethiopians to have access to famous pieces of Russian literature. The translators had lived and worked in the former Soviet Union.
– መልአከ ፀሐይ መልክአ ክርስቶስ ነቢዩ (ተርጓሚ)፣ ዜና አይሁድ፣ አዲስ አበባ፣ ኢትዮ ጥቁር አባይ፣ 2006.
This is a new edition of Josippon in Ge’ez with an Amharic translation by Mel’ake Tsehay Melke’a Kerestos. Printed in 2014, it has 433 pages. The work is a Ge’ez translation, from the Arabic, of the chronicle of Jewish history from Adam to Titus attributed to Josippon of Joseph Ben Gorion, in Ethiopia known by the Yoseph Wolda Korion. There has already been an edition of the Ethiopic version of Sefer Yosipon by the Egyptian Coptic Scholar Murad Kamil in 1938, based on 8 Ethiopian Manuscripts. This new edition has an introduction in Amharic in which mention is made of previous editions of this work. As for the format, each page has two columns. In the first one finds the Ge’ez text and a literal Amharic translation of the former in the second column, yet without annotations.
– ኅሩይ ባየ (መ/ር) ቅዱሳት መካናት፣ አዲስ አበባ፣ ያሬድ ማሳተምያ፤ 2006.
This book is on Holy places and Sanctuaries of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido Church. Published in 2014, it has 300 pages. It offers a description of 36 Holy places, including hagiographical and historical information. Sometimes the author includes details of his own field research on a given Sanctuary. Poems are also included here and there composed in relation to the religious setting. Information is also given by the author as to the current situation of the sites as well as some recommendations.

This is a book written in 2016 by Tena Dewo on moral philosophy. It has 503 pages. After a preliminary chapter on the meaning of philosophy, the following topics are dealt with: (Part I) Ethics and Morality, Concepts and theories of Ethics and morality, Rights and duties of Morality, Ways of developing Good behavior, Modern Moral Problems; (Part II) The Ethiopian People and its Moral life, Moral in Ethiopian Politics, Ethiopian Intellectuals and Morality, the International Context, the Youth and Morality, Recommendations.
– ወንድወሰን ተሾመ መኩርያ፣ የልጆች ባህርያትና የአስተዳደግ ጥበብ፤ አዲስ አበባ፣ ናሌህ፣ 2008 ዓ.ም.
This book is on Child behavior and the art of education. It has 398 pages and 13 chapters. The author Wondewossen Teshome, affirms that he has written the book for parents, tutors, teachers and trainers. The book combines both Ethiopian wisdom and the finds of modern Child psychology and Pedagogy.

This is a collection of Hailegabriel Dagne’s articles previously printed in Amharic (Part I) and in English (Part II) on Education in Ethiopia and published in a new format with 359 pages, in 2015. The purpose of the collection is to make it easier for students to consult the works of the above mentioned author. The articles focus on Ethiopian traditional Christian and Muslim education with detailed descriptions. Besides attention is also given to the “old age incidental education” and “modern Western education”.

This is an Amharic Commentary of the Ge’ez text, called Cyril (in reference to Saint Cyril of Alexandria), consisting of a patristic collection, and being one of the most important work for the Theology of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido Church. The translation of the Ge’ez text has been made from a Greek Vorlage although some sections are allegedly translated from Arabic. The Amharic commentary is published in 2015 and has 833 pages. It has prepared and published by Ezra Hadis, a traditional Ethiopian Scholar, teacher and administrator of the Holy Saviour Church in Gondar.

Haymanota Abaw, literally “The faith of the fathers”, is a collection of writings of Church Fathers as well as Patirarchs of Alexandria and Antioch, translated from the Arabic into Ge’ez probably in the 16th century. This book, published in 2015, is a Ge’ez-Amharic commentary (Andemta) of the above mentioned text. It has been prepared by Menker Mekonen edited by Ezra, both traditional scholars, teachers and administrators at the Holy Saviour Church in Gondar. The work has 1044 pages. Before this commentary, one may remember the edition of the text in Ge’ez and Amharic in 1967.
